Ganoderma applanatum is a medicinal polypore mushroom that fruits over several years and sometimes several decades. They have been used not only to boost immune systems but also to start fires and to transport burning coals. The spore surface of the artist conk is white until it is touched, then it turns a dark brown. This makes the mushroom a unique drawing surface which, several days after harvest, dries and retains its color permanently without fixative.
